Jonathan Mailata, of Te Atatu (right), chats to Local Government Minister Hon. Rodney Hide.

Jonathan works for Waitakere City Council and was attending customer services training in the lead-up to the establishment of the new Auckland Council.

Some 500 staff from across all of the existing councils in the region attended sessions which focussed on providing excellent, efficient customer service.

A series of booths introduced he staff to things such as the Call Centre and knowledge data base and web-based customer service tools. Minister Hide visited one of the sessions and spoke to staff, congratulating them on their commitment to high levels of "business as usual" service in the lead up to the formation of the Auckland Council (which comes into being on November 1).

He also said that customer service was a key focus of the governance reforms in Auckland: "Staff of the new Council are going to ensure that the people of Auckland receive efficient, effective, customer focussed services that are second to none not only in this country, but indeed in Australasia," he said.
